Job Description

MAPSA’s state-approved alternative teacher certification program, Professional Innovators in Education, is designed to inspire success through real-time coaching, cohort-based learning, and innovative professional development. The Assistant Director plays a pivotal leadership role in ensuring program quality, supporting educator growth, and driving innovation across our certification pathways. This position requires strong leadership, exceptional organization, and a passion for empowering teachers at every stage of their journey.

What You’ll Do

As the Assistant Director, you’ll take on a mix of leadership, coaching, and program management tasks such as:

Program Leadership & Coach Support

  • Oversee and support a team of 25 contracted program coaches, including their professional development, communication, and engagement.
  • Collect and analyze survey and assessment data to identify trends, inform improvement plans, and ensure program quality.
  • Collaborate with the Program Director on operational systems, program reporting, and strategic initiatives.

Candidate Coaching & Development

  • Provide direct coaching up to 30 teacher candidates, including reviewing assignments, conducting classroom observations, and offering individualized feedback and debrief sessions.
  • Manage the MTTC (Michigan Test for Teacher Certification) preparation project, offering both one-on-one support and group strategy sessions.
  • Develop Individual Development Plans (IDPs) to help candidates progress and succeed.

Curriculum & Innovation

  • Assist in curriculum design and updates for both general and special education certification tracks.
  • Coordinate enrichment courses and live sessions that enhance the candidate experience.
  • Monitor curriculum tracking and implement remediation or enrichment supports as needed.

What You Bring

  • Michigan teaching certification and classroom experience, with a deep understanding of the certification process.
  • Experience in coaching or mentoring educators, ideally using strengths-based or cognitive coaching approaches.
  • A reflective, growth-oriented mindset and a collaborative spirit.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities with attention to detail.
  • Comfort using data to inform decisions and drive continuous improvement.
  • Energy, creativity, and commitment to supporting teachers holistically.

Tech Requirements : This role requires a strong home internet connection as well as familiarity with digital platforms such as Slack, Google Suite, Zoom, Mighty Network, and Monday.com.

Work schedule : MAPSA’s office operates from 8-5 PM EST. However, we offer our team a flexible work schedule when needed. This role would require some nights and weekends to support your coachees, teacher connections, live sessions, and MTTC coaching.

Work Environment: We are a "remote-first" company, meaning all of our internal tasks and processes can operate virtually, most often from our home offices. Team members are required to attend a monthly in-person meeting at our Lansing office location. Travel, except to the office, is reimbursed.
