The City of Mandan, North Dakota is currently accepting applications for the position of: 

Firefighter/EMT - Grade 17

Position Details:

Salary: Starting at $58,978.61/year

Status: Full-time/Non-Exempt

Department: Fire

Job Summary:

This position performs firefighting, emergency rescue, emergency medical, and other emergency and non-emergency functions.

Major Duties:

• Responds to emergency assignments as dispatched in order to perform fire suppression, EMS response, hazardous materials response, rescue, and other emergency response activities.

• Provides emergency medical care, including CPR, assisted respirations, external defibrillation, patient immobilization, bleeding control, etc.; lifts, carries, and moves patients.

• Operates a variety of equipment as assigned, including fire pump, aerial ladder, generators, etc.

• Performs a variety of public education and fire safety activities; provides station tours; prepares and delivers fire prevention education for schools and other community groups.

• Performs inspections of buildings and businesses to ensure compliance with the fire code; performs pre-planning duties.

• Maintains equipment and performs required inspections; performs general equipment maintenance and repair duties; performs station and grounds maintenance; tests equipment such as hose, truck, self-contained breathing apparatus, turnout gear, hand and power tools, etc.

• Coordinates fire prevention activities for the public; schedule classes and events; orders and maintains fire prevention materials; prepares and delivers educational materials.

• Performs a variety of regular and special reports.

• Completes required training and maintains required certification.

• Performs related duties.

Knowledge Requires by the Position:

• Knowledge of fire prevention and suppression standards, practices, strategies, tactics, and apparatus.

• Knowledge of National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) and International Code Council (ICC) standards.

• Knowledge of incident command principles and practices.

• Knowledge emergency medical principles and practices.

• Knowledge of local, state, and federal fire codes, local ordinances, and departmental rules and regulations.

• Skill in decision making and problem solving under routine and emergency conditions.

• Skill in the operation and use of fire equipment and apparatus.

• Skill in public and interpersonal relations.

• Skill in oral and written communication.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

• The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

• The work is typically performed in an office, except while at fire or other emergency scenes. The employee may be exposed to noise, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, extreme temperatures, hazardous situations, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective clothing and devices.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with a high school education.

• Ability to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position.

• Possession of or ability to readily obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

• Possession of or ability to readily obtain and maintain Firefighter I and II, and EMT-B certifications within one year of employment.

• Ability to complete the medical and physical criteria as specified in the department’s Health and Fitness policy.

Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the physical agility testing. Those who pass the physical agility testing will be invited to participate in the written testing. The written testing consists of two components - mechanical reasoning and integrity inventory. Applicants must have a 70% or higher on the mechanical reasoning to advance. A high risk indication on the integrity inventory will be considered a disqualification. Upon successfully completing the physical agility and written testing, the top 5 candidates will advance and be invited to interview for the position.
